Todays colourful, contemporary find is the new Linear outdoor table and bench by Muuto. Although very simple, this sleek-lined outdoor furniture features subtle design details that nonetheless make a big impact.
I’m surprised at just how much I like these streamlined pieces. Maybe it’s the typically understated Scandi aesthetic or perhaps the minimal yet arresting colour palette. I decided a while back that if (when) we replace our current, traditional teak garden furniture then I’d like to opt for a more contemporary look. But one that isn’t too austere, and that blends quietly into the outdoor setting. And I think that the Linear Steel Series ticks all the boxes.
The mix of straight lines, gently folded edges, and semi-circular legs combine to form a softer outline that’s more organic than some of the angular outdoor furniture that you’ll see around. My first thought was that the legs remind me of slender tree trunks. And indeed, it turns out that the design of the Linear Steel Series is based on the construction of traditional oak furniture.
The bench seat slopes gently towards the centre of the bench for a comfortable sit. But it also allows water to drain out of the small central gap. So no more soggy bottoms after a shower of rain. The table has a similar central gap to make wiping away rainwater equally quick and easy.
The bench has also been designed to slip easily under the dining table to save space when not in use.
The choice of colours for the matt coating is also interesting. There’s classic white and black, plus a dark forest green and what they call burned orange (very big this year) although I think it looks quite toffee-coloured in a lot of these images. I haven’t quite made up my mind about this particular colourway yet – it probably needs seeing in the flesh, I think. I could definitely see it in a contemporary garden that has a restrained planting scheme with lots of green foliage and grasses plus natural stone or grey coloured accents. You can get a sense of how that might work from the image below…
Designed in Denmark by Thomas Bentzen and built in Sweden, the Linear outdoor table and bench utilises a strong steel frame and powder coating technology to create durable outdoor furniture that will withstand the elements with the minimum of maintenance.
So with the weather set fair for most of us for the Easter weekend it’s definitely time to start thinking about outdoor living again. Below are a few more links to past outdoor furniture posts, and I hope you have a lovely time, wherever you are.
