Today the focus is firmly on comfortable and stylish contemporary home desks for small spaces.
Having a work space at home (however tiny) is so important. And that applies equally whether it’s simply to deal with personal paperwork, or because you work from home full-time.
The benefit of having somewhere to sit comfortably, surrounded by objects and images that inspire and uplift you, is incalculable. Be that a corner of the living room, bedroom or kitchen, or a nook on the landing or under the stairs.
If you’re working in an area that’s cramped and cluttered, chances are that’s how your body and mind will feel too. So that’s why genuinely compact home desks for small spaces are worth their weight in gold. The best desks for small spaces will also have storage space. s0, drawers to keep office supplies and paperwork, or at least a shelf to slide the laptop away when you want to switch off and relax.
From my own experience of hunting for a small home desk, I’ve limited dimensions to 130 cm wide and 60 cm deep. That said, most of my finds are a good bit smaller than that so hopefully there’s one that works for you.
Here are the results – my pick of the best contemporary home desks for small spaces. I hope you find one you like.
Contemporary, compact home desks for small spaces
This lovely Scandi-inspired John Lewis Hairpin Desk is perfect for small spaces. Its hairpin legs and parquet patterned top make it stylish enough to take centre stage in any room. Dimensions: 120 cm wide x 55cm deep.
Also from John Lewis, and part of their ever-growing collection of iconic British contemporary designs, is the Celine desk by Nazanin Kamali for Case Furniture. Petite and elegant, it’s gentle tapering legs give it a dainty aesthetic, but it’s practical too, with its slim hidden drawer and laptop compartment. Shown here in oak, it’s also available in walnut. Dimensions: 110 cm wide x 55 cm deep.
Still on the high street, M&S has the versatile Sapporo Tall Desk, above, part of the Sapporo Living Room range of furniture. Crafted from sturdy bamboo, it has built-in shelves, lots of useful drawers and measures just 80 cm wide x 50 cm deep.
No line-up of contemporary small home desks would be complete with the Fonteyn Desk designed by Steuart Padwick for MADE – their very first designer collaboration. This is the desk I bought, and I love it – and so does pretty much everyone who sees it.
The Fonteyn Desk is incredible quality for the price. Above is the version I bought, in thick oak and walnut veneer with solid oak legs, but it’s also available in oak, or walnut and red. Dimensions 90 cm wide x 50 cm deep.
Don’t be fooled by the slender proportions and sleek lines of the Ercol Treviso desk. This desk gives ample work space on two levels, plus three storage drawers. Designed by Matthew Hilton and exclusive to Heal’s, the Treviso desk is handsomely crafted from either oak or walnut and measures 122cm wide x 53cm deep.
Part of the Cato collection from Habitat, the Cato Desk is available in various colours – black, red and sage green, plus white as shown above. It’s truly compact, with useful storage space, and measures just 75cm wide x 45 cm deep, making it the perfect home desk for very small spaces indeed.
If the mid-century look is your thing, then how about the West Elm Mid-Century Wall Desk? Full of character and versatile to boot, it has a drawer as well as additional storage up above in the double sliding door cabinet. The hardware is in a bronze finish for an elegant, sophisticated touch. We love! 96 cm wide x 38 cm deep.
How elegant is the Paco Desk in rich walnut? Measuring 120 cm wide x 61.3 cm deep it’s a tad outside our criteria. But just look at its curves! And the gorgeous styling of the drawers that are practical as well as handsome with bags of storage space.
Where floor space is severely limited, the wall mounted Fläpps Wall Desk, above, from Clippings is the ideal solution. Fix it to the wall at the desired height for a seated or standing workstation, and simply fold it away (below) when the work is done. Dimensions: 80 cm wide x 50 cm deep.
With its smart monochrome styling, you won’t want to hide the Graphik desk away. Crisp, contemporary design plus lots of storage make this small home desk a real style statement. Measures 120 cm wide x 60 cm deep.
