It’s May, the sun is out for the next few days and summer is really in the air – time to get our outdoor gear sorted out to make the most of it.
So we’ve scrubbed down the garden table and uncovered the outdoor comfy chairs. I bought a cotton ‘summer’ blanket last week on holiday for sitting outside in the early mornings and late evenings. There’s one more thing I would love for our patio area – a colourful outdoor rug.
Outdoor rugs are becoming increasingly popular and it’s easy to see why. As well as helping create a comfortable, extra ‘outside room’ at home these rugs are also incredibly versatile for all outdoor summer venues – think park, beach and camping as well as the back garden.
Also, and a bit counter-intuitively, outdoor rugs are just as useful and versatile for indoors, working beautifully in the kitchen, hallway, playroom and conservatory – wherever you need something hard-wearing, stain-proof and maybe child- and pet- proof too.
I’ve just found this fantastic selection of colourful outdoor rugs at online homewares retailer cuckooland.com – they stock some top names and great designs so I picked a few favourites to show you.

First up, indoor/outdoor rugs from Dash & Albert. I first came across this US brand at a design show and fell in love with their understated, contemporary, Scandi-influenced designs, so it’s great to see such a good range available here in the UK.
As well as being very stylish and beautifully made, they’re hugely practical. Made from recycled polyester that has the look of woven cotton or wool, Dash & Albert indoor/outdoor rugs are designed for high traffic wear and can be hosed down, scrubbed and even bleached. They’ve also been UV heat treated for outdoor use.

Next up are these very colourful outdoor rugs from Fab Habitat, an eco-conscious Australian brand who use recycled materials and natural fibres in their rugs. Their designs are bright, bold and modern – above is the Lhasa Outdoor Rug in Red and Violet and below is the Cancun Outdoor Rug in Blue Stripe.
Last but not least, how about this sumptuous outdoor rug from Fat Boy, who’ve combined a traditional Persian carpet design with modern materials and some really thoughtful added touches to make outdoor living super easy. The Fatboy Picnic Lounge Luxury Outdoor Rug is made from wipe-clean PU coated polyester, has a hole in the centre for a parasol pole and comes supplied with four giant fixing pegs to hold down the corners plus a dusting brush to get rid of pesky sand, dirt or grass. A genius touch is the roomy storage pouch attached to the rug for stowing valuables such as keys, phone, sunglasses etc. And although the rug is a generous 2.10 x 2.80 m, it rolls and folds up to reveal a carrying strap for easy transportation.
Right, that’s the garden, picnics, camping and the beach sorted then. Let’s hope the weather plays along too.
