I’m not particularly a Harry Potter fan, only having read the first book many years ago when it first came out, nor have I seen any of the films all the way through … But I am a huge fan of these beautiful prints by The Printorium, the creation of graphic designers Miraphora Mina and Eduardo Lima. Aka MinaLima, between them they designed and produced the hundreds of unique graphic prop designs for each of the eight Harry Potter films, including The Marauder’s Map, The Daily Prophet™ and a multitude of items for Weasleys’ Wizard Wheezes. I had the pleasure of seeing these beautifully designed and presented prints, and briefly meeting Eduardo, last week at Clerkenwell Design Week.
The Harry Potter Collection of limited edition prints are based on the original prop artwork produced by Miraphora and Eduardo during the making of the films. Printed on Hahnemuehle fine art paper, each print in these editions of 1000 is numbered, embossed and signature stamped by Mina Lima, and comes in three sizes.
A second collection, the Harry Potter Premium Collection, is limited to editions of 250 prints which are embellished by hand-worked details including metallic foils, and are hand-signed by the artists.
In addition to the Harry Potter prints, a new collection of original designs, The MinaLima collection, was inspired by the pair’s love of midcentury design. One series of prints depicts children’s nursery rhymes, and another – my particular favourite – is based on the art of the book with a series of fictional books covers featuring quotes from celebrated authors and literature lovers. The detail they have achieved on these prints is remarkable; the faded and worn book cloth of the covers is beautifully rendered and looks hand-painted, and the books appeared so real – almost 3D – that, much to Eduardo’s amusement, I had to touch them to reassure myself they really were flat prints.
In my usual indecisive fashion, I couldn’t decide which of the book series prints I liked best, so ended up not buying one at all. Luckily, all the prints are available to buy from The Printorium’s online shop, and can be shipped worldwide (“by owl, where possible” they say).
Also, if you’re in the London area you may like to know that The Printorium are having an exhibition of their work at The Coningsby Gallery, 30 Tottenham Street, London W1 from 17 – 28 June; I’ll definitely be calling in to see all these beautiful and magical prints again.
