Glide, 2010
The work of today’s artist, Sean Greene, feels totally perfect for this hot, sunny, summer weather that we’re basking (or sweltering!) in right now. The clear, bright colours – hot reds and oranges, sunshine yellow, cool lavenders and mauves, soft greens and Mediterranean turquoise – are the very embodiment of the warmth, light and energy of summer.
Try Letting Go, 2009
Sean was born in San Francisco in 1972, grew up in Connecticut and Vermont, and then moved to New York City aged 20 to study at the School of Visual Arts. Alongside the art course he also played bass guitar with indie rock bands both in the recording studio and on the road touring. This doesn’t seem to have affected his studies though, as he received his Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree in 1996, and after moving to Massachusetts two years later he he then followed up with a Master of Fine Arts Degree from the University of Massachusetts Amherst in 2004.
Sean’s website presents his artist’s statement as follows:
STATEMENT, ONGOING
color, color-as-light, color-as-paint, sensation, light, shape, motion, space, ambiguity, language, written forms, emotion, tactility, perfection, imperfection, comfort, discomfort, pattern, fashion, urban signage, advertising, doodles
It’s fascinating to see the progression from early paintings through to his current work; the curling ribbon motif that was originally inspired by light falling through trees gradually becomes more complex and increasingly colourful:

Sean’s website has more of past and present work, and I’m also extremely happy to have discovered that a selection of his current work is available to buy online at easyart.com as prints on fine art paper, available in four different sizes. Our ongoing living room revamp includes finding a large colourful print to replace a black and white photograph, and Sean’s work is definitely going on the short list – watch this space.
