The great thing about decorating your home for Christmas is that anything and everything goes – whatever your style, there are Christmas decorations to match. Although colour and pattern are my passions, strangely when it comes to Christmas I come over quite minimalist and monochrome. Luckily there are more and more gorgeous, simple, contemporary Christmas decorations around and nowhere does them better than one of my favourite online interiors stores Cox and Cox.
Decorating your home for Christmas needn’t just be about garlands and tree decorations either; there are lots of other ways to bring the festive season into your home, both practical and decorative.
So here are my favourite contemporary Christmas decorating ideas to ensure you have an extremely cool yule indeed – there’s still time to order and get them before the big day.
Snuggling up on the sofa to watch Christmas films wouldn’t be complete without a cosy blanket, and this snowflake motif Fairisle Tasselled Throw is woven in the UK from 100% pure wool. There’s an equally snuggly matching cushion, with beautifully blanket-stitched edges. With a generic winter theme, these aren’t just for Christmas – they’ll keep you warm well into the New Year too.
I absolutely love this geometric inspired Reindeer Card Holder. Made from a strong wire frame, each holder comes complete with twelve wooden pegs for displaying cards and includes subtle keyhole hooks for fixing to a wall. Great for festooning with lights and other decorations too – I think I’d want to keep this stately fellow up long after the twelve days of Christmas were finished.
Contemporary Christmas decorating ideas mean practical as well as decorative and these three lightweight wooden shelves sit together to create a simple Christmas Tree silhouette. They could be an alternative contemporary Christmas tree if you’re short on space, or be an additional seasonal centrepiece. They’re painted a pale grey, and handily stack together when not in use.
Candles are perfect for lighting up the whole winter season, and these lovely Birch Bark Pillar candles are stylishly rustic with their strong Scandi vibe. They’re made from high quality, unscented wax and burn for up to 40 hours.
Or how about adding to the festive lighting with this contemporary zinc Noel Carnival Light?
It wouldn’t be Christmas Eve without hanging up the stockings, and here are a couple of real beauties:
Snowflake Felt Stocking
Red Felt Stocking
These lovely Indoor/Outdoor Birch Trees are incredibily versatile. Leave them bare and enjoy the simplicity of their silvery-white silhouettes, or decorate them as minimally or maximally as you like. They’re pre-wired with soft white LED lights and have a weather proof coating so can be used indoors or out.
More versatility from these simple, contemporary Extendable Black Festoon Lights which can light up your Christmas garden – and then stay there for the rest of the year.
This Midwinter Forest Wrapping Paper is my pick of the Christmas wrappings this year. With its simple white illustration on strong, quality kraft paper it ticks all my boxes for festive simplicity and could be used for lots of decorative projects as well as gift wrapping.
