A recent bedroom update – new carpet and a new wall colour – also included new bedside tables with storage for small spaces. I love the minimalist look of a teeny tiny shelf or simple stool next to the bed. But in reality (or my bedroom anyway) I need space for a few night-time essentials – bedside lamp, radio alarm, glass of water, reading glasses, handcream, pile of books… You get the picture.

That said, I don’t like clutter either. Which meant I was on the hunt for bedside tables with storage that would accommodate our bits and pieces but still look streamlined. Our bedroom isn’t particularly small, but we have a large wardrobe with pull-out doors that eats into the space next to the bed. So I was looking for a pair of compact bedside tables with some combination of drawers, shelves or cupboard.

Here are some of my favourite finds, and what we finally bought. Spoiler – our lovely new bedside tables came from high-street favourite Marks & Spencer and are very well made, great value for money and (I think) look super-stylish. See what you think…

Top 10 bedside tables with storage for small spaces

Art deco vibes meet cool, contemporary styling in the Harvard Bedside Table from John Lewis & Partners. Shown above in dark grey, it’s also available in a very pale grey. Love those sleek, tapered legs and the roomy drawer and deep shelf.

Next, more 1920’s glamour, but in a very different style, courtesy of the Bronze & Glass Industrial Bedside Table from Rockett St George. Utterly divine, yet practical too, with two shelves and a spacious drawer.

The Juno Bedside Table has delicate marquetry detailing and two generous drawers. A contemporary take on a classic style that will fit equally well into traditional and contemporary homes.

Ercol furniture, with its simple styling and superb craftsmanship, has been on my wish list for the longest time. Finally, I thought, might this be the opportunity to buy some? Sadly not, as the sizes just didn’t work. The fluid lines of the Rimini Compact Bedside Table stole my heart, and would be fantastic in a room where space is really tight. At a petite 32cm wide it was just too slim for our room, and would have been dwarfed by our monster wardrobe. And the larger version – the Rimini 3-Drawer Cabinet – was too big at 47cm wide. Our ideal size was 40-44cm max, so the search continued…

This opulent beauty above was never a serious contender. But a little fantasy interiors shopping is always good for the soul, right? Bone inlay creates the Art Deco-inspired pattern of the Optical Inlay Bedside Table from Anthropologie and brass accents add extra wow factor.

Regular readers will know I’m a big fan of the Brunel furniture range designed by Rob Scarlett exclusively for Heal’s. So the Brunel Bedside Table obviously had to make it into this round up. Solid American oak, industrial powder coated steel legs and delicate spindle handles combine to create a modern classic. And two drawers and a shelf provide ample bedside storage.

As you know, I’m a sucker for marble and brass, so couldn’t resist the Trinity Marble Top Bedside Table from John Lewis & Partners. Teamed with a golden-brown acacia wood, the marble and brass look glamorous but not too glitzy and deep drawers are beautifully practical. We’ll keep on saying it… furniture for small spaces doesn’t mean going short on style.

The simple lines and natural materials of the Dasai Mango Wood Bedside Table from Nkuku combine rustic simplicity with contemporary style. I have a soft spot for round tables with drawers, and the Rise Bedside Table is very cute, don’t you think? Sadly it didn’t work in our space, but I think it’s just lovely and round tables of any type are brilliant space-savers in small rooms.

Finally, this is the bedside table with storage that we eventually bought – the Nord Bedside Table from Marks and Spencer. It has a very roomy drawer and generous shelf which accommodates my reading pile. It’s compact without being too skimpy, so there’s plenty of room on the top too. Made from a mix of oak veneer and solid oak, it blends well with our Ercol/White Company bed and other furniture in the room. Finally, the style of the legs creates an illusion of space around the piece which makes the room look more spacious and uncluttered.

I went to have a look at it in-store before buying and was really impressed with the quality. I also have to mention that it arrived promptly and incredibly well packaged. The legs do need screwing on, but that’s all the assembly needed.
