Mixing metallics into your room schemes adds lustre, texture and a contrast to soft furnishings and natural finishes like wood. You can opt for just tiny touches of metallic finishes in the form of small home accessories, or go all out with a larger piece of furniture or statement lighting. There are so many wonderful contemporary metallics to choose from but I have to admit I have a real soft spot for the warm, deep, honey tones of brass.
Brass has a traditional (some might even say stuffy heritage) but recently it’s been given a new lease of life and has never looked better. It particularly sings when teamed with deep colours such as inky blue, forest green and dark grey, and tones beautifully with more neutral hues such as blush pink. Here are some of my favourite modern brass accents for the contemporary home.

Brass legs are teamed with sustainable mango wood, bone and resin in this luxurious bedside table from Anthropologie. The Optical Inlay Bedside Table comes in two colourways – blue pictured above and black.
Candlelight flickering on reflective metallics creates a very special warmth and ambience, the perfect antidote to dark winter evenings. Above is the Balance Candle Holder in brass by Ferm Living at Heal’s.

Nkuku Kiko Brass Hanging Picture Frame. The hinged metal case surrounds two glass panes and is hung on specially printed ribbons. Nkuku is an environmentally aware company that endeavour to create products using recycled and natural materials through sustainable methods of production. They also promote and develop the traditional skills of artisans in India and Africa in fair trade conditions.

No line up featuring modern metallics would be complete without Tom Dixon, so here’s his Beat Table Lamp. Inspired by the sculptural simplicity of traditional water vessels used in India, it incorporates his familiar hand-beaten, brushed brass shade, and the smooth, slender, articulated arm sits on a contrasting iron sand cast base.
