Last week’s post about getting outdoor spaces ready for the summer proved very timely. The early May weather (for once) was glorious at the weekend and we had most of our meals outside – bliss. I realised, though, that I could do with stocking up on tableware for al fresco eating so this new colourful outdoor tableware collection from John Lewis has arrived at the perfect time..
The Botanical Brights Edit (which includes other homewares as well as outdoor tableware) takes inspiration from “the lush abundance of the tropics” – cue exotic palm frond motifs, bright tropical hues and natural textures such as woven bamboo and beautifully grained wood.
But the Botanical Brights Edit isn’t just bold and colourful, it’s incredibly practical too. It’s always a bonus when fun, style and practicality come together, so here are my picks to bring some tropical vibes to our table this summer.
Colourful outdoor tableware – the Botanical Brights Edit
Sunny days call for cool drinks – and lots of them. So top of the shopping list is this Pitcher and 4 Tumbers set from the La Selva Picnicware range. Made from hard-wearing acrylic, the tumblers stack inside the jug for easy storage/transportation and are in the collection’s signature bright tropical shades. A great choice for picnics and camping as well as at home, and the styling will please children and adults alike.

Once the shadows start to lengthen then a sundowner is the perfect way to end a hot summer’s day. No more worries about taking glassware outside, the Botanical Brights Edit has it covered with this acrylic Cocktail Shaker and Margarita Glasses (one of my top picks). I can just see these full of lovely icy cocktails – strawberry daiquiri anyone?
If you’re sticking to wine, though, no problem – the Stacking Wine Goblets above will fit the bill perfectly.

Time for some food, I think, to go with those drinks. There’s a wide choice of colourful outdoor tableware in the La Selva Picnicware range to help create a stunning, summery table with a truly tropical vibe.
The melamine plates and bowls are super-practical and you can mix and match the exotic foliage motifs with plain pieces in bright colours, like the set of 4 plain bowls below. These are also on my list because they’re just so versatile – perfect for cereal, salads and desserts as well as for serving dips and nibbles.
Warmer weather brings pests as well as pleasures, and I was reminded again at the weekend whilst preparing lunch and swatting away flies that I’ve been meaning to buy food covers for ages. Beat pesky insects and brighten your table at the same time with this woven bamboo Food Cover.
For more formal meals I’m coveting this lovely collection of handmade soda glass tableware in a subtle leaf green. It’s summery and fresh, and will mix in perfectly with our white tableware especially if I add in the palm-motif runner and napkins below.
The Olive Wood Salad Bowl above is incredibly handsome, isn’t it? I’m a complete sucker for anything made from olive wood, with its rich, intricate grain, so this is on the list too.
I’ll leave you with a few more images of the Botanical Brights Edit, and let’s keep our fingers crossed that the weather will carry on behaving itself until September – at least.
