We’ve just returned from a very late ‘summer’ holiday – a week in the picturesque, laid-back town of Kaş in Turkey, on its Mediterranean ‘Turquoise Coast’. I first visited this area nearly 15 years ago for work, and have very special memories of magical times there. The combination of expanses of turquoise sea, blue sky and lush green forests tumbling down to the water’s edge are the perfect antidote to London living. Plus Turkey is famous for its carpets and other bright and beautiful textiles and handicrafts – my idea of heaven.
Here are a few pictures from our recent visit – a little bit of sunshine and colour therapy as we head into winter here in the UK.
Detail of a door and bell pull – turquoise and orange together always do it for me!

Deep pinky-red pomegranates were to be found in abundance, and the freshly squeezed juice was absolutely delicious.
Another colourful door, this time to a shop full of delights, like these bright, patterned fabric bags below. Tulip-inspired motifs are very common in Turkey.

Shades of blue everywhere, and beautiful traditional tiles too.
Pink and white bouganvillea were in full bloom, and the simple graphic shapes of the leaves below caught my eye silhouted against the afternoon sun.

This bold, bright sign is for one of the many small hotels tucked away in the narrow, winding streets of Kaş.
Down by the harbour – traditional and contemporary carpets, and a lovely old Ottoman-style building.
.I always meet the nicest people on Turkish gulets, the traditional fishing boats that are now used for tourism). Thirteen years ago it was Ron (now my husband – true story!). This year it was the delightfully warm, funny and friendly Silvia, an artist and teacher. Here she is being camera-shy with a beautiful embroidered wool and silk vintage textile piece that she bought.
Call me superficial, but one of my favourite sights/colour combos is white sun parasols against a deep blue (cloudless) sky. Right on the water’s edge, the terrace of the small but perfectly formed Sea View Hotel didn’t disappoint.
Friday is market day in Kaş, a truly local affair as well as some touristy things too. Colourful local produce was piled high and very hard to resist. These mini, striped aubergines were something I’d not seen before.
And what better way to wrap up than with a golden, glowing sunset, and the elegant slender leaves of an olive tree in silhouette – quintessentially Mediterranean, colourful and beautiful.
