With autumn firmly here, and winter fast approaching, now’s the time to make our homes cosy, bright and cheerful for the coming months. Little tweaks here and there – an extra lamp, a warm, woolly throw, some strategically placed candles – can make all the difference and create a sense of comfort and cosiness that delights the eye and lifts the spirit.
Dark evenings – and grey days – call for extra special lighting, and lamps that are bright and colourful in their own right before they’ve even been switched on are particular favourites. These petite, candy-coloured Polka Lamps are a series of small playful, concealed lights for the home, designed by Birmingham-based industrial design studio Plant & Moss.
The Polka Drop is a plugged pendant lamp with a generous 3 metre cable, which means you can plug it into any electrical socket and then hang it wherever you need a little extra brightness – and move it around easily too.
And if metallics are more your thing than colour, the Polka Series also comes in a brass finish (see left). Brass is very much in vogue at the moment – I even read recently that “brass is the new black”. I’m not sure what that signifies for party outfits this winter (“little brass dress” doesn’t sound quite right somehow) but there we are.
The neat Polka Mouse Lamp, above, is as versatile as it is cute. With the he light angled at 45 degrees, and again coming with a very useful 2.5 metres of cable, it can be positioned anywhere you want some extra illumination and gentle uplighting.
And my particular favourite in the series, pictured above, is the Polka Table Lamp. It’s so neat and compact it’ll fit into the smallest space – very handy for small desks, narrow shelves or bedside tables – and it’s made from a lovely mix of materials that make it particularly fun and contemporary. It’s also adjustable, so with a quick turn of the butterfly nut you can alter the angle of the head to suit the task at hand, and even turn it into a mini-uplighter.
All the lamps in the Polka Series utilise LED bulbs, giving bright, efficient lighting wherever you need it. So light up a few dark corners this winter, and make the coming season a little more colourful, and a whole lot brighter.
