How about some hot colour to brighten up a grey day? One of my favourite products at last week’s Clerkenwell Design Week was this Special Edition Anglepoise lamp produced in collaboration with designer Paul Smith.

Anglepoise® + Paul Smith is a super stylish and colourful new interpretation of the classic Anglepoise® Type75™ table lamp, which was created by leading British industrial product designer, Sir Kenneth Grange. He took his inspiration for the Type75 from a 1970’s Anglepoise lamp that had originally been launched in the 1950’s, and now in 2014 the Type75 is reinterpreted again by Paul Smith. Famous for his mastery of colour, Smith chose to use different hues on each streamlined component of the lamp. When I saw the lamps I felt that these simple blocks of colour really made me look at how the lamp is constructed, and to notice how slim and elegant the jointed limbs are. The colours also serve to throw into relief the famous springs that give Anglepoise lamps their manoeuvrability and balance.

The two iconic British designers say:
“It has been brilliant to work on this project. Anglepoise® is such an iconic piece of British design, I am honoured to have been involved.” (Paul Smith)
“Anglepoise®, never out of fashion and a product that will last and last, and Paul Smith, a special slant on design with invention, humour and some charming eccentricity: a unique design partnership of two great British companies.” (Sir Kenneth Grange)

The lamp will be available to buy online, in selected retailers and in Paul Smith shops this September but numbers are limited. If you’d like more information or would like to be notified about when it will be available for pre-order then you can email paulsmith@anglepoise.co.uk.
