In a recent post about the Smith Mattress which brings boutique hotel comfort to your own bedroom, I mentioned that we’d recently bought a new mattress – and bed frame.
This was part of our great bedroom makover – so exciting! Having discounted metal bedsteads and upholstered beds for reasons I won’t bore you with, we decided that contemporary wooden beds were the way to go.
Our bedroom is a fair size but not huge – so the bed frame couldn’t be too chunky. And we also wanted one without a footboard. But beyond that the brief was fairly loose, although we definitely had in mind something simple and contemporary but not too modern (if that makes sense). Plus it had to fit in with existing bedroom furniture.
So here are some of the beds we looked at (and the one we eventually bought – it’s lovely!) – our Top 10 contemporary wooden beds.
Top 10: contemporary wooden beds
1. As usual, we started the search at John Lewis for their contemporary design at affordable prices.
Looking for a contemporary wooden bed that really showcases the beauty of the material? Then the oak Essence Low End Bed, above, might be for you. It’s a modern take on a classic bed design, made from solid oak and with beautifully crafted dovetail joints.
2. The clean, simple styling of the Wilton Wooden Bed Frame, above, (also from John Lewis) makes it very versatile – dress it up or down to suit any number of interior schemes. It’s also brilliant value for money. The version shown above in white was on my shortlist, and it’s also available in natural and dark stained pine.
3. I do like four poster contemporary wooden beds – although sadly it’s not a style for our current house. Designed by Tim Rundle, the Marlow 4 Poster Bed from Heal’s is exquisitely crafted from solid walnut with minimal joins for an elegant, subtle finish. I’m stashing this image away in my “Interiors Inspiration” file.
4. How stately is this Solid Mango Wood King Size Bed from Maisons du Monde? I love the colour and grain of the aged timber that is guaranteed from sustainably managed forests via a unique traceability system in collaboration with The Forest Trust.
5. I’d fallen hard for the Brunel Bed with Oak Headboard when I saw it in-store at Heal’s. I love the industrial style of the metal legs and it’s an amazing price considering the amount of solid oak and the craftsmanship involved. Sadly, the Brunel wooden bed didn’t quite work in our Victorian house, but if it’s the one for you then you might like to know you can get under-bed storage boxes to match.
6. The Liana Ash and Rattan bed, above, from MADE is really lovely, don’t you think? Understated and stylish, it marries smooth curves, natural timber ash and woven rattan. The design was created in collaboration with Sebastian Cox who’s deservedly known for beautiful modern woodworking, craftsmanship and sustainability.
7. The Meiko King Size Bed with Drawer Storage in Walnut Stain Pine combines contemporary Japanese style with practicality. The floating effect is very zen and stops the bed looking too bulky but you still get lots of handy under-bed storage
8. Made from Mindy wood, the Juno Wooden Bed Frame has a subtle brushed finish which creates an organic feel that also shows off the intricate grain. We love the understated marquetry detailing on the headboard.
10. … Because the bed we finally bought was the Ercol Devon Bed for the White Company (which I’d featured previously here on the website. The rest of the Devon bedroom furniture range is gorgeous too).
We chose it because of its slim, elegantly shaped elements. I’m particularly fond of the rounded and tapering legs. Plus the combination of white and natural wood ties in nicely with our existing wardrobe and chest of drawers.
So that’s it! If you’re looking for contemporary wooden beds I hope you’ve found some inspiration here. Do let us know, we’d love to hear from you.
