These striking terracotta and copper vessels are by Hend Krichen, a Tunisian designer who is currently based in London. I met Hend briefly at a show at the beginning of the year after these vessels caught my attention as being very fresh and different. (Elle Decoration obviously think so too, as Hend is featured in their June edition’s “Name to Know” section).
She explained how her “Tunisia Made” collection, which also includes textiles, is the work of skilled Tunisian artisans using local, traditional materials which Hend has deliberately chosen to keep in their raw and natural form – “physically revealing the country’s identity and showcasing Tunisia’s available natural resources through products that can be used within the home in everyday life”.

Hend’s initial inspiration was to take Tunisia’s local craft traditions, and adapt them to produce luxury homewares for the 21st century – “beautiful timeless objects designed to enrich everyday lives through the use of the rich artisanal skills and craftsmanship in Tunisia”.
To this end she commissions the artisans, who are based mainly in rural towns, to make her designs. This has created an ethical network of manufacturers, providing them with jobs and an opportunity to develop and grow, and to sell their work to a wider international audience.

The shapes are simple and elegant, with the warm shades of the terracotta and copper blending perfectly and the mix of materials contrasting to striking effect. Terracotta is one of Tunisia’s biggest imports, and copper is also a rich natural resource. The earthenware components of the collection are are made using a mould, and the copper sections are turned by lathe and the etchings applied using a hammer and nail. The collection includes a water jug, drinking container and jars and vases in two sizes.

Get more information and to buy online here, and Hend will also be showing her collection at Clerkenwell Design Week which starts next week on May 20th.
