The Solid Pendant Lights by Terence Woodgate were right at the top of my “favourite products” list at last year’s Clerkenwell Design Week. With CDW 2016 about to start next week, this post is embarrassingly late … but better late than never I guess.
Why was I so bowled over by these small and deceptively simple lights? I think because great design, materials and craftsmanship will always make their presence felt – and also make the heart beat faster.

Quiet and unshowy on the surface, the Solid pendant light absolutely screams quality and style. And the small proportions somehow contrive to make dramatically more of an impact than a larger light fitting would do.

Anyway, enough of me gushing, here are some details. Designed by industrial designer Terence Woodgate specifically to optimise the benefits of LED technology, the Solid lights have a softly rounded inner edge at their base (a design signature of the collection) and the lower section glows with a subtle diffused glow when lit.

The Solid lighting collection come in two shapes, the Cylinder and the Cone, which are both available in fine-grained marble or solid wood – oak and walnut – in black-stained, brown or neutral finishes. And because these natural materials vary in their grain and markings, each Solid light shade body is unique.
Both shapes also come as either Pendant Lights or Down Lights that affix directly to the ceiling. The pendant version features a patented adjustable shade support allows the shade to be hung absolutely vertical and straight and is supplied with cable and a neat conical, powder-coated ceiling rose with hidden fixings.

The Solid Cylinder Light is, as the name suggests, a pure cylinder and perfectly proportioned and formed. I’m struggling to put into words just how beautiful and fascinating I found these lights … I really wanted to touch them, as much for their shape and proportions as for the tactility of the materials.
I think I’m going to give up on trying to describe them, and leave you with these images. LED technology is advancing all the time, and with lighting designs as beautiful as these then its not just the energy-saving technology we can feel good about. As Terence Woodgate says:
We say: job done. Our aim is to create exceptional lighting, by designing and engineering innovative products that are relevant, ultra-efficient and beautiful.
