A couple of weeks ago our Weekly Edit was inspired by resin, a material I love for its warmth, softness and silky tactile quality. It’s also incredibly versatile, and can be cast, sculpted and carved into all manner of shapes ranging from crisp, sharp angles to softly rounded, organic curves.
Dutch designer Roel Huisman has just produced this stunning Writing Table, the first model in his new series ‘Tables’, a follow-on to his ‘Shelves’ series, also made of resin (more of which later). The desk was on show during London Design Week at the Mint shop in London’s Knightsbridge as part of their ‘Cabinets of Curiosity’ exhibition.

Pigments were added to a naturally transparent polyester resin to achieve the desired colour and level of opacity, and then underwent a series of processes during which it was cast, milled, sanded and polished. Built-in accessories include the adjustable light, storage compartment and vase, which cleverly make the absolute most of the the small surface area. Imagine having a conventional vase of flowers on the end of the desk – an accident waiting to happen as you reach out for something! The transluscent slab of the resin reminds me of pure vegetable glycerin soap, and the gentle aqua colour looks gorgeous next to the pale wood.

Shown below is the ‘Shelves’ series that I mentioned earlier, which also incorporates lots of clever features to maximise usefulness. The shelves come in a range of 5 standard colours: soap green, pink, yellow, mulberry red and white, and in sizes 20/35/40 x 20 x 6 cm.
