Living in Ealing, West London, we are incredibly lucky to have a marvellous local gallery and framing studio at Ealing Green – For Arts Sake. They specialise in contemporary original prints and have an extensive selection of etchings, silkscreens, linocuts and lithographs, including limited editions. Their small craft gallery features the best of British designers and makers, with an emphasis on ceramics. They also participate in the Own Art scheme that enables you to purchase contemporary art and craft on a no-interest monthly repayment plan, which makes buying original pieces very much more affordable and accessible.
A display of beautiful porcelain vessels by Lara Scobie caught my eye as I passed their window the other day. Their delicacy and elegance is echoed by the minimal, graphic surface marking and abstract decorations. Lara is “equally interested in the space that surrounds pattern as much as the hue and texture of the decorated surface”. I very much like the fact that large areas of her pieces remain undecorated, giving the material itself room to speak and express its character. She cites her artistic influences as including “Mastisse, Miro and Lucien Day”.
Her work is both decorative and functional, as you can see from the pictures below of jugs, pourers, beakers and bowls.
