This new range of furniture by architectural and interior design consultants Invisible City, seen at Tent London 2012, was a real standout for me; the collection included some of the finest and most exciting pieces there on every count – design, colour, materials and craftsmanship.

Designed by Simon Moorhouse and handmade in Britain by skilled craftsmen from sustainably sourced wood, the Incunabular collection includes a desk, sidetable, sideboard and a range of cabinets.  The dimensions and ratios of the various pieces are taken from:

“the international paper standard ISO 216, Series A. The geometric rationale behind this series is the square root of 2, which maintains the aspect ratio of each subsequent module, i.e. A3, A4, A5 etc.”

Which all sounds incredibly complicated, but take a look at the relative sizes of the doors and drawers and it all starts making sense.

The pieces are wonderfully solid and ooze quality and craftsmanship.  Choose an all-wood finish (European oak or American Black Walnut) and they’ll easily fit into the most traditional of rooms.  But the option of door and drawer fronts in a cleverly chosen range of standard or limited edition colours (or even totally bespoke), is what elevates these designs to another level; surely modern classics in the making.

Details such as the beautifully chamfered edges give a feeling of elegance and refinement, and prevent even the largest pieces from feeling too chunky or heavy, as do the delicately tapering, cleverly arranged legs.  Despite names like “Lowboy”, “Tallboy” and “Wideboy”, these cabinets definitely aren’t afraid to show their feminine side too.
