The recently launched homewares range from French Connection has created a bit of a buzz, with this inaugural capsule collection of furniture, lighting, ceramics, glass, and home textiles prompting such diverse descriptions as “modern rustic”, “industrial chic”, “Hamptons beach house” and “urban loft” … and despite sounding contradictory, they’re all spot on.
The mastermind behind the collection is Irish designer Lorraine Brennan who has previously worked for companies such as the Conran Shop and Kelly Hoppen Interiors, amongst many others. A pared-down, sophisticated palette of blue, white, grey, tan and taupe, combined with lots of natural materials, textures and finishes makes for infinitely versatile pieces that will fit into many homes today regardless of their interior style.
I’m particularly taken with the safari chair (pictured above) – one of the real stars of the collection – the distressed mango wood screen, with its beautifully soft and worn patina, and the woven copper and zinc side tables (details of both below).
The chunky Brass Knuckles table lamp (pictured left) has real character too (plus I love the name), as do the ceramics and artisan glass with their uneven shapes and textured finishes.
What I like the most, though, is that despite being decidedly contemporary there’s also a timeless quality to many of these designs that means they’ll carry on fitting in for years and years to come.
