I’m loving this new contemporary Chesterfield Sofa from Swoon Editions. Incidentally, there’s been lots from them recently that’s caught my eye, but we’ll leave that for another day. In fact, “the modern Chesterfield” has been on my list of future posts for a while now, but we’ll leave that round-up for another time too.
Today, centre stage goes to Hettie, this sleek, four-seater, contemporary interpretation of the traditional Chesterfield sofa. Much of the iconic Chesterfield styling has been retained – the scrolled arms and top edge, the diamond patterned and button-tufted back, and the tight-fit upholstery.

But a few subtle tweaks have brought the Hettie sofa right up to date, making it eminently suitable for contemporary homes as well as more traditional ones. The downside of the traditional Chesterfield is that it’s a big, chunky piece of furniture. If you have the space, and a room with the right proportions, then that’s great – it will look fantastic, and Chesterfield sofas are available now in a huge range of gorgeous fabrics and colourways as well as the traditional leather finishes (I must do that Top 10 soon!).
The clever people at Swoon Editions have given Hettie a bit of a mid-century make over, with slender, tapering legs that create space and airiness around the sofa. It’s more of a fine-boned thoroughbred now, rather than a sturdy Shire horse, and will work much better in smaller spaces.

Other updates include refining and slimming the profile of the scrolled arms , and replacing the traditional folds of fabric on the sofa back with stitched panels, to give the classic diamond pattern between the buttons. This is a lovely touch that’s much cleaner and more contemporary looking (and won’t collect the dust either).
The choice of upholstery for the Hettie sofa is also very current – a wool-rich fabric, in one of Swoon Edition’s most popular shades, Powder Blue. Add all these styling details together, and you have a very fuss-free, minimal, modern Chesterfield sofa that will look fantastic in contemporary spaces.
