There’s so much to like about these new, contemporary wallpaper designs in an understated, modern colour palette from Bold & Noble, the design studio run by husband and wife team David Wardle and Jan Tobitt.
With just a few simple, clean lines they manage to capture and convey so much of the essence of the British countryside and the wild outdoors which, they say, is a big source of inspiration for them:
Our vision was to create beautifully made homewares people would love and that is what we hope we’ve done. Merging maps and typography, graphic prints inspired by nature our designs are printed using traditional methods onto recycled or carefully sourced materials. Our love of design sees us trawling flea markets and, weather permitting, heading out of town, into the wild to seek inspiration from the environment.

I’m particularly taken with ‘Northeasterly’, above and below, with its windswept trees “inspired by the wild and windy British coast”. It reminds me of a huge, wind-blasted old tree outside a cottage that we stay at regularly, situated right on the coastal path in South Devon. Each year when we go back there the tree appears ever more horizontal, and indeed its lowest branches are now skimming the ground. ‘Northeasterly’ comes in three colourways: the lovely orange ‘Sunrise’ above, and two shades of grey – ‘Twilight’ and ‘Soft Grey’, both below.

In contrast to that wild and windy coastal scene, here are the softly rolling contours of the design ‘South Downs’, shown above in ‘Sea Grey’ and below in ‘Heron Grey’. It’s so immensely clever that this almost hypnotic design has been created using just two elements – curved and straight lines – and that they so perfectly depict the gently undulating British countryside with its patchwork of fields.

This next design,’Autumn’, brings to mind breezy walks in the woods with leaves tumbling down all around, the seeds and fruits of autumn, and late blooming flowers such as chrysanthemums and dahlias that bravely soldier on until the first frosts. It’s available in two colourways; shown above is ‘Charcoal’ and below is ‘Soft Grey’.

The last design in their contemporary wallpaper collection is Province, which Bold & Noble describe as “Lowry meets Scandinavian folklore”. There are streets of tall houses and throngs of people, but water, boats, clouds, mountains and trees continue the theme of nature that runs through the whole range. Again, ‘Province’ is available in two shades of grey, dark ‘Graphite’ shown above, and the softer ‘Natural Grey’ below.

If you’re a fan of nature, but also like a clean, bold, graphic style then this collection from Bold & Noble brings the two together with great style and charm. Hi Kathy
