genevieve dressing tableHow about this for a fabulous mix of materials and a contemporary yet timeless design? Maybe no surprise, then, to find that the Genevieve bedroom furniture collection is by this year’s Best British Designer, Bethan Gray. She’s designed it exclusively for John Lewis, who are well known for working with both up and coming, as well as established, designers to bring contemporary design to the high street.

But back to this very desirable collection of bedroom furniture. It’s all made from solid oak, and the Genevieve dressing table has a marble top with brushed solid brass over-sized handles (which also appear on the chests of drawers too – more of those below). I particularly like that the dressing table isn’t too deep, making it ideal for modestly sized rooms, and also that the adjustable mirror is larger than average – some dressing tables have teeny, tiny little mirrors that aren’t very practical at all. There’s also a matching stool in the range, pictured below, that’s upholstered in a mid-grey textured fabric and is very elegant and simple.

The Genevieve collection includes two chests of drawers, also in solid oak and again with the over-sized brass handles. I think they look particularly great on these chests, which come with either 4 large drawers or, my favourite, this 5 drawer version above.

To complete the range, there’s the free standing hanging rail, above, and the versatile Genevieve ladder below.  I love the idea of these ladders, and you see them looking gorgeous in lifestyle shots artfully draped with a few beautiful items, but I fear in the reality that is my house it would end up covered, very unartfully, in an assortment of random clothes and scarves that I couldn’t be bothered to put away properly.

Genevieve ladderWhat a treat – there’s Scandi simplicity, a dash of mid-century modern, fantastic use of materials and a whole lot of Bethan Gray magic in the Genevieve range – bedroom furniture that’s very now, and will look very, very good for a long time into the future too.
