Iconic British furniture manufacturer Ercol has designed a small but beautifully formed range of bedroom furniture exclusively for The White Company. The Ercol Devon bedroom furniture range includes a wardrobe, chests of drawers, side table and, star of the show in my book, the Ercol Devon Bed. Beautifully shaped oak spindles form the legs and headboard and contrast with the white painted sides and top rail.
The rest of the range continues the same themes. Classic shapes are given a contemporary make-over, and natural wood contrasts with a white paint finish.
Based on the design of traditional tables, the Devon Side Table, above, has an elegantly shaped smooth oak top, whilst its solid birch legs have been finished in white.
The styling of the Ercol Devon wardrobe and chests of drawers mixes traditional details such as bevelled fronts to the doors and drawers with clean modern lines, and the gently tapering oak legs and delicately proportioned and finely shaped handles bring the pieces right up to date. These are the kind of touches I describe as “everyday pleasure” – tiny details that bring such enormous delight when we look at and use thoughtfully designed, lovingly crafted things every day.

The White Company also stock other Ercol classics designed by Lucian R Ercolani, who founded the company in 1920. Pieces include the Love Seat (designed by in 1956), the Stacking Chair, the Chairmakers Chair and the Bar Stool, with its shape based on the stools that Ercol’s draughtsmen used in the 1950’s whilst working at their drawing boards.

The Ercol Devon bedroom furniture range, like all of their furniture, is beautifully crafted, and its simple, elegant and timeless designs make it infinitely versatile. The pieces can be used together or alone, mixed and matched with other styles and looks, and they create a very stylish blank canvas to which you can add bright colours or serene neutrals as you choose.
