BRIGHT2013CROPToday, more offerings from the recent Home 2013 show.  As a big fan of Danish fashion brand Day Birger et Mikkelsen, you can imagine my delight when I spied their large and very lovely stand packed with home textiles, lighting and decorative accessories – the new Day Home range.  They bring the same sensibilities to their interiors collections as they do to their clothes – a sophisticated melding of eastern inspired patterns, embroidery and embellishments with contemporary silhouettes and styling, all beautifully crafted.

Founder and owner Keld Mikkelsen was involved in textiles from an early age, and later spent a decade working in Asia where he became fascinated by the exceptional craftsmanship in Hong Kong and India.  His vision was to combine ancient embroidery, prints, patterns and trimmings with Scandinavian simplicity and vintage inspired styles.  As he explains:

“For us, eternal truth lies in timeless designs.  It’s this balance of art and craftsmanship. Ancient and contemporary. Ethnic and international. Which we re-work to become our own with a distinctive Scandinavian style.”

It’s a family affair.  Keld’s wife and “partner in crime” Marianne Brandi is the head designer of Day Home and their daughter Amalie is the inspiration behind 2nd Day, the younger diffusion line.  Together they have turned this family-run, design-driven company into a global business.

dark neutralsTheir new interiors collections for Spring/Summer 2013 pick up two of the main catwalk trends for the coming seasons – bold, bright colours, with orange/pink coral to the fore, plus the timeless black and white monochrome look.  I love the way they’ve photographed these ranges against a dark background – proof, if any were needed, that dark neutrals used on your walls can really make bright colours sing.  Queen of the moody interior Abigail Ahern constantly exhorts us to “come over to the dark” … I’m not sure I’m quite ready (actually, brave is the word I’m looking for) to give up my off-white walls yet, but these pictures definitely show how dramatic and gorgeous it can be.

The colourful Flora collection has a palette of pinks – bright fuchsia and softer rose, teamed with coral and yellow; the cooler blues and greens of the Lake collection are inspired by Scandinavian lakes and forests; whilst the Monochrome designs, in addition to crisp black and white, offer subtler shades of creams and greys that soften the classic look.  All the colour palettes are made up in an eclectic mix of stripes, suzani-style embroidery, embellished silks, and dip-dyed and printed patterns allowing you to be as boho-hippy as you like, or keep it simple, modern and graphic.
