Multicoloured contemporary plant hangers against dark wallIt’s probably not escaped your notice that there’s a 70’s revival on at the moment. Having started last year on the catwalk it’s now in a shop near you – yep, flares, fringing and kaftans are back.  I’ll leave you to decide if that’s for good or ill; it probably depends on whether you remember them from first time around …

But if revisiting the 70’s sartorially is just too scary, then there are home accessories aplenty to channel the look – and none better than these macramé plant hangers by colourful beautiful things HQ favourites, A Rum Fellow.

We’ve featured their stunning artisanal textiles previously (take a look here) but this new collection – Knot Native – is the creation of A Rum Fellow creative director Caroline Lindsell.

Caroline learned to knot in her creative youth, but then moved into fashion and textile design.  Her recent experience of working closely with highly skilled textiles artisans whetted Caroline’s appetite for being hands-on again, and inspired her to design this collection of macramé products for interiors.

As you can see, though, Caroline has brought macramé firmly into the 21st century.  My memories of it from the 70’s are of unremittng shades of oatmeal, with the odd wooden bead added in for excitement.  Knot Native, by contrast, is a contemporary twist on the style, using copper accents and bright colour to create a bold, modern look that adds a fresh appeal to the charm and beauty of the traditional knotting.

Intricately knotted macrame plant hanger with copper accents against dark wallI think the Pimlico plant hanger above is probably my favourite, because of the intricacy of the knotting, although the coloured ones ones do look absolutely stunning against these dark backgrounds.

The ancient craft of using decorative knots to create textiles and interiors accessories has a fascinating history.  A Rum Fellow say:

Knotting as an art form has a long history forming part of diverse cultures including 13th century Arabic weavers, Italian lace, British sailors, and South American jewellery. Knot Native is an evolution of this venerable tradition reinterpreting the art form for a modern context.

As well as these macramé plant hangers, Knot Native also make wall pieces, like the one above, and offer a bespoke service for both domestice and commercial projects – you can find all the details at arumfellow.com.

I definitely won’t be wearing flares this time around, but I’m loving this contemporary macramé look.  Just as long as spider plants don’t make a comeback too.
