Colourful tableware in pink, red, turquoie and orange

This range of colourful tableware – very aptly named POP – is the perfect example of “everyday pleasure”.   It’s practical and functional, but incorporates so many beautiful details it would be an absolute delight to look at, touch and use every day.

Designed by Ann-Carin Wiktorsson for Swedish design company Sagaform, the series contains a coffee/teapot, a small jug, a cup and saucer, a mug, a bowl with a lid and plates.  Ann-Carin drew on influences from the fifties and seventies for both form and colour, and there’s a combination of chunky roundness and delicate lines in the styling that’s very appealing.

Deep plum jug with pink handleGrey cup with blue saucerThe clever colour palette includes gloriously retro pale green and pink, whilst the bright red, orange and turquoise are straight out of American pop culture – think diners with their glossy leather  seats and chrome trim.  Add shades of dark plum and cool grey, and the overall look is one of playful sophistication rather than playground primaries.  That said, the shiny glaze adds enough of a fruit jelly look to satisfy the strongest inner “kid in a sweet shop” urges.

I particularly like the lidded jar, which could be used for sugar (so along with milk in the jug afternoon tea could become a proper “tea party”) but would also be lovely used for decoration around the kitchen or dining room.  Although if you’ve got cabinets with glass doors, the whole collection makes a pretty gorgeous display too.

Colour, pattern, and design are all about making the ordinary extraordinary, and transforming our everyday routines into very special, and profoundly pleasurable, occasions.  And who wouldn’t want a little bit of that?  Pass the sugar, please  …
