On holiday last year I bought some brightly coloured, ceramic, retro-styled hanging plant containers – I couldn’t resist the gorgeous, glossy hues and they were just so different to anything I’d seen before. I found them in the gift shop at Sunnylands, a stunning example of modernist architecture just outside of Palm Springs, and their groovy, retro shapes fitted right in with the local mid-century ambience. We were having an amazing trip to Southern California, and I was so happy to have found something special to remind me of our adventures. So imagine my surprise (and delight) when I saw these exact same hanging plant pots – and many, many more contemporary plant containers, planters and vases – on the Chive stand at the Home UK show in London in January.

Part of me was just a little disappointed to discover that my holiday souvenirs hadn’t been made locally in some cool, hipster SoCal ceramics studio, but on balance I was really happy to find more shapes and colours in the range so I could add to my collection. And it also meant I could write about them here, and hopefully many of you will love them as much I do, and be able to buy them easily from the Chive website – Palm Springs is quite a trek, after all.
The three hanging containers pictured above are called the Egg, Nest and Orb respectively. I originally bought two Eggs, one orange and one blue, and a Nest in dark grey, as they were the only two shapes in the shop. So I’m planning on adding an Orb in white plus, I suspect, a few items from the selection below – I find the simple organic shapes and gorgeous colours irresistible.

Many of the containers in the Chive range are perfect for air plants and succulents, which are a bit of a new thing for me, but I’m looking forward to buying my first specimens and having a go. I have to ‘fess up and admit that the three containers I bought on holiday last October are still sitting on top of our kitchen cabinets, empty. So writing this is the perfect motivation to get them filled and hung up somewhere ready for the spring.

There are also some clear glass terrariums available, including the large Mofo Windtunnel above, which apparently ended up so big due to a mix up in the measurements when the sample was being produced. What was orginally meant to be 11 centimetres ended up as 11 inches, but when they saw it they realised it was exactly right as it was, and the Mofo was born.

The Pill Terrarium, above, is a new product, and the ceramic base comes in lots of colours. There are so many more wonderful, colourful things I’d love to show you, but I’m going to stop here, and suggest you hop on over to the Chive website and have a good old browse yourself. With Spring just around the corner and all the lovely blossom and blooms starting to appear, this is the perfect time to get some inspiration on how to display them.
