It’s that time of the year again, when the goings on in the big, white GBBO tent grip the nation – tears, triumphs, soggy bottoms and all. I don’t mind admitting I’m a huge fan, and for my money there’s nothing quite as beautiful as a freshly baked cake (Mary Berry standard, of course) on an equally beautiful cake stand.
Right on cue, last week I spotted these elegant Acacia Cake Stands which are hand-carved and come in two sizes. They’re among the new arrivals at Anthropologie, who are always the absolute best place to find unusual, colourful bakeware and tableware – here are my favourites for fabulous cake baking (and eating):
The delicate bone china Maelle Cake Server is perfect for serving your mouthwatering creations. There’s also a gorgeous range of matching bakeware and utensils – see images below – and the baking dishes are all oven and dishwasher safe.
Coloured metallics continue to be a huge interiors trend, so bring some into the kitchen with these copper-coloured Russet Measuring Cups, which are in fact made from practical stainless steel.
Inspired by “French pantries and traditional cooking” The Vivant Kitchen Collection is made from two-toned stoneware with strong, clean lines. Let them eat cake indeed.
The popular Hampstead teashop Ginger & White shares their recipes for their delicious treats, both savoury and sweet, including their famous Stem ginger Loaf in The Ginger & White Cookbook. Paris Pastry Club is a compendium of a childhood memories and recipes by French pastry chef Fanny Zanotti, who is now London-based. “From her grandma’s nougat to her mama’s orange and yoghurt cake, as well as her own contemporary recipes, this is a must-have for pastry pros and novices alike”.
I spent years scorning the wearing of an apron in the kitchen, but have to admit that practicality now wins out. If you’re looking for something a little fancy, Anthropologie have the most fantastic range of colourful, stylish and intricate aprons. I wish that some of them were actually dresses or skirts, but check them out yourself, and here’s my current favourite, the Bahia Apron with its cool stripes and bright accents.
