Today’s object of interiors desire is the Circus Velour Pouf by Normann Copenhagen. Although it’s previously been produced with wool upholstery, the Circus Pouf’s latest incarnation in velvet creates a glorious blend of traditional and contemporary, minimal and opulent.
Like much Scandinavian design, at first sight the Circus Pouf looks extremely simple and understated – which on one level, of course, it is. Look a little harder, though, and the subtle details become more obvious.
The upholstery of the top section is cut as segments, which are seamed together with impeccable precision. Then there’s the Circus Pouf’s substantial yet elegant lines – plump yet streamlined, with just the right mix of curves and straight lines. Do I sound smitten? Well, yes I am. There, I’ve said it.
And, of course, velvet is extremely popular right now (a great example of the “new modern” that we wrote about here), so the Circus Velour Pouf is very much of the moment. Although I can’t imagine it ever looking dated.
Ditto the colours available, they’re all very covetable and immensely versatile. The blush pink has my vote, although the deep midnight blue is a close second. That said, the pale silvery grey is just so elegant …
I’m also a huge fan of poufs in general, as they’re so versatile, which is always a very fine thing to be able to say about purchases for the house. Poufs can double as extra seating, a side or coffee table (best use a tray on top to avoid spills) and a comfy foot stool for evenings on the couch.
Top marks from us, then, to award-winning Danish design brand Normann Copnehagen for making this very traditional piece of furniture so very contemporary and so very beautiful.
If you’re smitten too, the Circus Velour Pouf comes in two sizes, has a soft foam top for comfort, a hard foam lower section, and a wooden base for strength and stability.
