Giving flowers on Mothers Day (which this year falls on 30th March) is very much a tradition, but here are some beautiful bouquets with a very extra special something – the National Gallery in London and acclaimed contemporary florist Wild at Heart have collaborated to create an exclusive collection of artistic flowers inspired by paintings in the Gallery. (They’re available all year round, by the way, not just for Mother’s Day).
I have a particularly soft spot for Wild at Heart, founded by the inspirational Nikki Tibbles, who always produce spectacular and original arrangements of the best quality flowers. Years ago I was the lucky recipient of their stunning bouquets for Valentines Day three years running from a (sort of) secret admirer. Wild at Heart are also the in-house florist at Liberty of London, situated at the store’s Great Marlborough Street entrance, and when I’m up that way I always go to see their gorgeous displays of colourful blooms (they smell heavenly too), which make a visit to one of my favourite shops even more of a treat.
But back to the present – that was just by way of explaining why I decided to write about this collaboration, as I know how lovely Wild at Heart make their arrangements, and even non-art lovers will appreciate these amazing flowers. The National Gallery have chosen eight of their paintings to provide the inspiration for these bouquets and floral arrangements, each of which is accompanied by a personalised greetings card of the respective painting. Some of the works of art are very recognisable, such as Van Gogh’s “Sunflowers”, above, and Rousseau’s “Surprised! Tiger in a Tropical Storm”, below, whereas others are less well known.
This bouquet is inspired by “Madame Moitessier” by Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres and comes tied with a printed floral ribbon that echoes the pattern on the dress in the painting.
The arrangement above takes inspiration from 17th and 18th Century Dutch still life painting, with the flowers and foliage reflecting the mix often seen in Netherlandish art, including lilac, guelder rose and a colourful array of roses to match the layered style favoured by artists such as van Huysum and van Brussel.
This very pretty and delicate bouquet has been inspired by “The Virgin and Child Embracing” by Sassoferrato. The soft colours and the tenderness captured in the painting is echoed in the detail of the flowers which, depending on availability, could include delicate ‘Pepito’ roses, wax flower, lisianthus, anemone and tulips.
