Today we’re celebrating “All Things British” – cups of tea, cricket matches on the green, rose gardens, “Anyone for tennis?”, bowler hats and brollies …
These bold, modern and graphic wallpaper designs are by award-winning surface pattern designer Annette Taylor-Anderson who draws her inspiration from “everyday surroundings observed from the diversity in culture, architecture, music, and fashion”.

I love the way these wallcoverings combine traditional imagery with contemporary and sometimes surreal influences; the bowler hats, brollies and pipes floating on pin-striped backgrounds bring to mind Magritte’s paintings, with a good dash of Sherlock Homes and 1950’s City gents thrown in for good measure.

“Cricket Wicket” above, and “Let’s Play Cricket” below, were inspired by Annette’s many childhood games with her brothers who were, and still are, big cricket fans.

The “All Things British” Wallpaper Collection is just one of the many vibrant collections available from ATADesigns, the company that Annette founded in 2006. Do visit the website to see her take on, amongst other subjects, art deco with a modern twist, urban London, nature and (one of my other favourites) construction, a collection of designs based around buildings, bridges and the cranes that are so much a part of the urban skyline these days (sneak preview below of “City Wallpaper”).

As well as wallcoverings, Annette’s designs are also available on murals, fabrics, cushions, lampshades and tableware, and she’s always happy to work on bespoke commissions and collaborations with other designers, architects, interior designers and specifiers.
To finish, I’d like to give a mention to Margaret Doyle, author of the Good at Looking blog, and one of the like-minded online friends that I’ve “met” since starting colourfulbeautifulthings. Margaret thought I might like Annette’s wallpaper designs as much as she did, after meeting her at the Craft Central Corner Shop last week, and was absolutely right – thank you Margaret!
