First you’re chilly, then far too hot, then cold again… Yes, it’s that perennial problem of how to dress for the British summer.
The answer? Clever layers – and that principle extends to summer home textiles as well as to wardrobe choices.
Our summer duvet just hasn’t been cutting it the last few nights, so on went a summer-weight cotton blanket as well. (Although to be honest, my toes were still a little cold when I woke this morning).
I’ve also found myself feeling chilly and reaching for a cosy throw as I’ve been sitting relaxing at the end of the day.
With layering in mind, some of my favourite summer home textiles this season are to be found at online home store Urbanara. They’re contemporary, stylish and a little bit different from other retailers.
Most importanly though, these seasonal layers are made from cotton and linen. Summer home textiles need to be light and comfortable, not heavy and woolly, so this selection is perfect.
Top of my wish list is the Anadia Cotton Quilt, an unusual cotton waffle type blanket. It’s described as a quilt but there doesn’t seem to be any padding involved, so I’m going with blanket/bedspread. That said, the Anadia’s unusual weave creates a double layer, so you get extra thickness and volume for additional warmth as well as interesting texture.
I love the on-trend colours that include a stunning mustardy yellow (top of page and above), a dark inky blue and charcoal grey (below).
Made in Portugal, the traditional home of quality cotton home textiles, the Anadia is available in single, double and king sizes so it really will be practical as well as decorative.
A very close second is this lovely linen and cotton mix throw/bedspread, that combines subtle stripes with a textured jacquard weave. As the product notes say, these contemporary stripes will work with lots of different decors.
A great partner for eclectic and ethnic-inspired looks, it’ll also work with traditional neutral schemes and it’s absolutely perfect for a fresh, modern seaside/nautical vibe.
The matching cushions are very simple and chic too, even though I’m not usually a great lover of cushions on the bed.
To cope with the coolest of summer weather, the 100% cotton Samana Velvet Bedspread might be the answer. Check quilting on the front creates dramatic texture, whilst cotton padding and a soft cotton voile backing provides lightweight warmth and comfort. Oh dear, this seems to have crept onto my list too…
I’m rounding off with some subtle pattern – the Viana cotton throw/bedspread. From a small-scale Portuguese manufacturer, the Viana is inspired by traditional Mediterranean tile patterns and woven in soft 100% cotton thread using an intricate Jacquard technique.
Again, there are matching cushions available which would be also perfect for outside lounging when the weather’s hot and you want some cool cotton against your skin.
Visit Urbanara.co.uk to see more easy, breezy summer home textiles, and they’re currently offering 10% off some of their ranges – but only until Sunday.
A happy weekend to you all, and happy layering too.
