A summer bedroom refresh is so simple – isn’t it? Swap the winter duvet for the summer one, and hunt out the light-coloured linens. Job done, right?
Trouble is, our unpredictable summer weather is a regular rollercoaster. It can be scorching hot one day and downright chilly the next. Which makes getting our summer bedlinen right – and consequently a good night’s sleep – rather less simple.
The secret, I’ve found, lies in ‘dressing’ our beds for the summer, just like we dress ourselves. In clever, versatile layers that you can easily add and just as easily take off again.
And how to achieve this optimum mix of coolness and cosiness? A combination of natural fabrics like cotton, linen and silk in multiple, thin layers will give you maximum breathability and cool/cosy comfort.
So even though the weather is predictably unpredictable, you’re prepared for whatever it throws at you.
For this guide to summer bedlinen I’ve teamed up with The White Company, so I took myself along to their flagship Symons Street store to see (and feel) their latest collections. Not exactly an onerous task for a textiles lover like me!
The range of bedlinens in The White Company’s signature whites and serene neutrals are perfect for a fresh, contemporary summer bedroom. There were good choices, too, whatever your budget – from great quality basics to pure, decadent indulgence.
Another big plus: the minimal colour palette means that all the pieces work together perfectly across all the ranges. So you can mix and match to create a summery bedroom look that’s beautiful and really works.
There’s absolutely everything you need, in fact, to keep you cool when it’s hot and cosy when it’s not. Let’s dive in.
Summer bedlinen collections from The White Company
First, this 200 Thread Count Egyptian Cotton Bedlinen is their basic range and all-time best seller. They describe it as “superior quality at an excellent price” and I have to agree.
It’s worth noting that The White Company’s basic ranges are of fantastic quality and extremely good value for money. When you invest in quality home textiles it’s always money very wisely spent.
Next, the St Ives range, inspired by a cosy pair of pyjamas. Made from 200-thread-count tumbled washed cotton, it has a soft handle and is very easy to care for, too.
The smallest details are often the biggest source of everyday pleasure, don’t you think? Above, I love the delicate, white-on-white, embroidered French knots of the Adeline Bed Linen Collection.
And below, a ditsy print is teamed with fine pinstripes and tie fastenings for the Laurent Bedlinen Set in washed tumbled cotton.
Another best-seller is the sleek Savoy collection, an ultra-smooth 400-thread-count Egyptian cotton percale luxury bedlinen. Made exclusively for The White company in Italy, it feels quite amazingly soft and smooth – a must for truly comfortable summer bedlinen.
How utterly fresh and beautiful does this look? Linen bedlinen has excellent breathability and temperature-regulating qualities – pefect for summer. The simple yet sophisticated Santorini Linen Collection is made from fabulously slubby linen with a hand-sewn ladder stitch border.
This 1000 Thread Count Symons Cord Bed Linen Collection surely has to be the Rolls Royce of luxury bedlinen! Made from high-quality Egyptian-cotton sateen it feels luxuriously smooth, soft and silky and has a lovely sheen to it.
Finally, here’s the dreamy Clarendon Collection crafted from 75% linen enriched with 25% silk. I’m utterly smitten and love the chic yet casual slubby, pale grey pinstripe. It’s indulgent, super-soft and feather-light.
Versatile summer bedlinen layers for your bed
Summer duvets alone, I think, can’t deal with the up-and-down temperatures of the typical UK summer. They’re often not quite warm enough, other times just far too hot.
This is where layers come in, to use as well as a summer duvet – or instead. They’re quick and easy to switch around in varying combinations from day to day for optimum comfort.
The White Company has an excellent selection of summer top layers for your bed, from the lightest cotton throw to heavier weight quilted bedspreads. Here are my favourites:
The light yet cosy 100% cotton Classic Rib Bedspread is ideal for layering over a sheet.
Lighter still, for the hottest nights, is the versatile 100% cotton Herringbone Bedspread woven from marled-cotton yarns with feathery, white fringing that feels very summery.
Next, here’s ultimate summer cosiness teamed with chic, contemporary style. The Hudson Quilt is hand-quilted, filled with plump cotton layers and has a contrasting linen/cotton border.
Finally, inspired by French vintage matelassé style, the Vintage Etienne Bedspread is made in Portugal from 100% tumbled washed cotton for a soft, comfortable finish.
I hope that you’ve enjoyed this round up of fresh and versatile summer bedlinen. And also that you’ve found some inspiration for a beautiful, summery bedroom – and for a good night’s sleep.
P.S. Totally coincidentally, but with excellent timing, I just learned that The White Company have 20% off all homewares this weekend, 25 – 28 May. A great opportunity to invest in some beautiful bedlinen that, treated well, will last you for years.
